state which is up for grabs. governor mitt romney at an earlily in port st. lucie and he has a major address on foreign policy tomorrow at the virginia military institute and then the governor making a promise about taxes. >> a study came out this week that showed with all his spending, and all of his borrowing and all the interest on at that debt, that he will ultimately have to raise taxes on middle income families by 4,000 a year, and this commitment i make to you, i will not raise taxes on middle class families. while governor romney and his wife ann as you saw there were meeting with the crowd in florida, president obama also on the campaign trail this sunday, fund raising in hollywood. more on that in a moment. but first, john roberts is travelling with the romney campaign and john, with the rally late today, governor romney wraps up the florida swing. >> and three days here in the sunshine state. big rally in port st. lucie, 12,000 people one of the biggest crowds of his campaign so far and this state is beginning to friend this his

direction. in fact, nationally, democratic leading policy poll found he gots a 5 point bounce out of that debate and the governor looking ahead to the next presidential debate, but as he left florida he couldn't help taking a parting shot at president obama's performance last wednesday. >> so i'm convinced that you all had the chance to hear his answers or his nonanswers. now, of course, days later we're hearing his excuses and next jan, we'll be watching him leave the white house. >> and governor romney's got a big foreign policy address at the virginia military institute lexington and already the obama campaign trying to get out in front of that saying when it comes to the commander-in-chief test, governor romney fails on all levels, harris. >> john, let's talk about thursday night. denext debate featuring the vice-presidential nominees and i know, anticipation is already building. >> oh, yeah, absolutely, you

know, you've got two people here who are very skilled and know what they're talking about and governor ryan's challenge to make sure he doesn't get too deep into the weeds for vice-president biden, to avoid the gaffe he's prone to on the campaign trail. at least he's skilled enough he won't make one of the gaffe at the vice-presidential debate. and people are still talking about the debate last wednesday on the sunday shows, excomplaining or lauding their candidates performance. and here is what he said. >> governor romney laid out a plan tore turning the economy around and a fact-based kret teak of the president's failed policy the president was unable to respond to and today, and since then, the obama campaign, they reminded me a little bit of a seven-year-old losing a checker gain and then instead of, you know, being frustrated

at the outcome, they sweep the board off the table. >> you know, this campaign was turned on its head as governor chris christie of new jersey predicted a week ago. the polls are tightening across the country and now it's a 29 day sprint to the finish. >> indeed. john roberts live in florida for us. and i mentioned that president obama is in california expected to make the rounds of celebrities and wealthy donors tonight. as you know, both candidates spending a lot of cash on the duelling tv ads, running in critical swing states and all of these days after the first presidential debate. the obama team having to spend some time and energy looking back on what even the president's top advisors admit was a lackluster performance, and the questions from reporters still coming. >> the president's never satisfied with his performance. he always challenges himself. i know that he's reviewed the tape and you know, make whatever adjustments he sees as necessary. >> and chief white house

correspondent ed henry is live for us. and sounds like the candidates acknowledging that the president didn't get the job done in the last debate and heard axelrod about looking ahead. what exactly is the strategy for looking ahead. >> one of the strategies privately the president getting more aggressive on pushing back against governor romney when he leveled charges about the president's record the last four years, and the challenge for the obama camp is the second debate is not going to be the same format. it's a week from tuesday and at hobson university in new york, a town hall forethe mat and real voters asking questions in addition to the moderators and if you get too tough you might look too aggressive. what they're doing in the meantime, admitting the president didn't give his best effort perhaps, but saying it's all mitt romney's fault and he was fudging the facts. take a listen. >> it's not rocket science to believe that the president was disappointed in the expectations that he has for himself. but look, i think part of that

was because as i said earlier, we met a new mitt romney. we met a mitt romney that wanted to walk away from the central theory of his economic plan which is his tax cut. >> now, the pushback from the romney camp it's the president's charge that the governor has a 5 trillion dollar tax cut that's starting to fall apart, as the facts play out on that one. nonetheless, democrats not giving up. governor martin o'mally of maryland on fox news sunday and charged that mitt romney's performance was big bird meets the big lie. >> speaking big bird, i understand the president is rubbing elbows in los angeles tonight? >> yeah, he's got a big concert hee, 6,000 people are going to turn out ab george clooney among the speakers and katy perry performing and stevie wonder is going to be there. you see the glitterati there, jennifer hudson, jon bon jovi, a mix of performers turning out. if he's not hurting for cash

the most expensive gas price in that state's history now. the dramatic surge following the power outage we're told on monday in an oil refinery in attorneys. and the it forced them to reduce the fuel plan until friday. experts it expect a temporary shutdown to cause a spike in prices and california typically has higher fuel prices due to the strict regulation plans and the governor today directed the state's air resources board to take emergency steps in order to help increase supply and decrease prices. senior business correspondent brenda buttner with the news. >> harris, big time gas paints in california and prices at the pump jumping to all time highs. why? a shortage of supply, part of the problem that refinery temporarily powering down and a pipeline carrying crude shutting down. plus, inventories low as refineries get ready to switch it a winter blend of fuel, that leads to one reason why california in many ways is a

market unto itself. and a fragile volatile one at that. so many regulations on the kind of fuels drivers have to use make it hard to find substitutes from other parts of the u.s. when supply shortages drive prices higher and the so called middle man from oil to the pump. we don't have a lot of them and in california no new ones created in decades and still, national pump prices were higher than this time last year and the average price for a gallon of gas in the u.s. rose less than 1/2 a cent over the past two weeks and prices actually fell from 3 to 12 cents in most markets, except the west. for a while, you may need gold to buy gas in the golden state, but prices could level in other parts of the country. a lot of it depends on what happens not over here, but over there, with tension high in the middle east. oil prices could climb, along with the amount you need to fill your tank. harris, back to you.

>> new reaction tonight to the latest jobs numbers and the political battle intensifying this weekend following friday's unemployment rate except it fell to 7.8% and republicans saying the jobs picture is

much more grim than the democrats would like for the public to believe. doug mcelway is live for us in washington and it sounds like the political debate got started with a controversial tweet on twitter from former head of ge, jack welch. >> welch is one of america's most rebe inspected former ceo's. so when he tweets, people tend to listen. within minutes of the jobs report he tweeted quote, unbelievable jobs numbers. this chicago guys will do anything, can't debate so change numbers and facing a torrent of criticism for that. welch stopped by his tweet and those numbers. >> this whole number is made up of a whole mess of an assumptions who is participating and who is not working and who is trying to work, but dropped out. all of these things, it just raises the question, oh, i think there ought to be a good discussion about how this number is calculated. >> and most analysts aren't dismissing his crimsism as utterly without evidence and

at the same time pointing out that the jobs numbers reflect an obama policy that has the economy stuck in neutral. >> they had full charge of the first two years and the policies that this president put into place actually made it worse, including the fact that obamacare is actually, you ask small employers, it's causing them not to hire because of rising health care costs. >> former white house press secretary robert gibbs touched on the the jack welch tweet. >> we wonder what institutions in this country are the perception of institutions are failing because people go on tv and make stuff up. we asked for the evidence and he had none. >> job growth, certainly we're not where we want to be. >> many analysts combed through, attribute decline in unemployment. an increase in part-time work and unable to find full-time

jobs and settling for part-time jobs. >> harris: i'm sure they know it's what they add up to underemployment. you had full-time and now part-time a completely different paycheck into your household. we're hearing back and forth with the campaign. the romney campaign's reaction to this. >> keep in mind this deprives the romney campaign of a major talking point. it's been a continuing refrain from the romney campaign that that unemployment rate had been above 8% for better part of the administration, they he can't say that anymore, it's a volatile number. only one more unemployment number to come out. released friday, november 2nd, four days before the election, a lot of people are going to be watching for that one, harris. >> and then going to the poles, doug. good to see you, thank you very much. let's push in deeper. while the national unemployment rate fell to 7.8%, the economy added only 114,000 jobs, and that's still very far short of where hiring should be for a healthy economy. and we find the numbers are far more bleak for some

particular groups. molly henneberg, takes a look at this part of the story from washington. >> three of president obama's most loyal voting blocks in the 2008 election are struggling in the current economy. remember, september's national unemployment rate is 7.8%, and breaking that down by demographics, african-americans, 13.4% unemployed. that's up from 11.3% this time four years ago. hispanics, 9.9% unemployed. up from 8% in september 2008. and young people, ages 18 to 29, a september unemployment rate of 11.8%. and up from 9.8% in 2008. one analyst says young people often can't get a foot in the door. >> the economy is simply not creating enough full-time meaningful jobs at the entry level because you have so many more people competing for those jobs now that have advanced degrees or regular degrees and the market's very tight for them. >> but do these unemployment numbers mean the president

could lose some support among these groups? one policy analyst who used to work for a democratic senator says probably not. >> it's probably not going to impact. in the end the economy matters for any politician running for election, but voters are looking for something than more than plug in some number and what comes out is a certain percentage of votes. you have to woo constituency on a whole series of levels. >> but one hispanic add he vvoc says it should have an impact on voters. >> and it's stuck at 10% and above and mr. president, where the jobs. you promised in 2008 to bring jobs back to the hispanic community and they're not there. >> james with the heritage foundation say the unemployment numbers say more about education and training than about race, he says, quote, less skilled, less educated workers are doing very poorly, no matter what race they're from.

saying the outbreak has already killed at least seven people. doctors reporting so far infections across nine states. one third of those cases in tennessee, where three of the people have died. health officials say the drug in question is mainly used to treat patients with back pain and the massachusetts pharmacy at the center of the outbreak has now pulled its products off the shelves nationwide. elizabeth prann live tonight for us from the atlanta bureau with more. health officials think they know the source of this deadly disease. >> experts say the source is the steroid injection is really commonly use today treat back pain and the drug was shipped to doctors and pain clinics across the u.s. from a new england compounding center in massachusetts and the f.d.a. has since recalled the injections and is working to notify anyone who may have been infected with the contaminated drug and meningitis is often caused by viruses or bacteria, but this particular strain is caused by a fungus.

the pharmacy that distributed the steroid linked to the outbreak has since issued an additional voluntary recall of all of its products calling the move a precautionary measure, harris. >> harris: well, it feels like the numbers are fluctuating on a daily basis and told that this incubation can be 28 days. >> people who have the infection can be anywhere from a week to four weeks before we see the symptoms develop. it's already spread across nine states. seven people have died in tennessee, michigan, maryland and virginia in just the past week. and more than 90 people have become sick according to the centers for disease control and prevention, and symptoms can be as seamless as a neck pain or some discomfort, but as serious as stroke and even fatalities. the c.d.c. says the fungus strain of meningitis is not contagious. but listed the 75 pharmacies

and clinics that did receive shipments. so if you have any questions go to c.d.c..gov and if you've received any injections since july. notify your doctor immediately. >> harris: thank you very much. the united states enters the 12th year in afghanistan. and operation freedom, since the attacks in september 11th, our troops along with some allies have been risking their lives every day in the combat zone and more than 2000 troops died since our longest war began. the fox news senior military analyst oliver north is streaming live in northwest province in afghanistan with u.s. n.a.t.o. and afghan special forces. colonel north, we spoke with you last night. you were bringing us up to speed what was going on on the ground and now we reached this milestone point today. >> it is a very powerful anniversary, harris, as you

know. and many of these remarkable soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen and marines are back from multiple tours over the last 11 long years of war, marking this the start of the 12th year. it's important, i think, that the american people know who these young americans are. and so, we've been travelling with them now for the better part of the last ten days, different units each day and it's important, i think, to have people see some of these very special people with whom we have been keeping company. one war, two brothers, both marine special operators with an inspiring message for the american people. >> and they get, you've got a lot of experience working with those nations and other allies out here. are they going to be able to step up and take responsibility by it looks like 2014? >> yes, they will. they've got a lot of work to

do, i think they understand that as much as we do, but, yes, i think they will be able to stand up and take responsibility for security, for governance and development on their own. >> this is my second combat deployment to afghanistan and i just wish american people would understand there's a lot of people here that still believe in what we're doing out here and are willing to come back again and again to prove that point. >> and the other americans like matt and matt-- by the way, matt's wife will be here next week, she's a helicopter pilot with the marine attack helicopter squadron. she'll be here in country at that point. that kind of a commitment, that dedication, that courage is what it's going to take to win this war. and these americans believe it can be done and should be done. harris. >> harris: colonel north, before i let you go, i'm just curious about your own

personal assessment of where things are for the young men and women and you saw him talking about it was multiple tours for him at this point. >> it's multiple tours and very serious injuries as you can see, and the marines,'s still a special operator and we were with his unit at this point in time just a few hours ago looking at these injuries you'd say this is some guy that doesn't need to be doing this. his commitment is based on his assessment that i share, that this is indeed a war that could be won, that it needs to be won, and that these are the right people to make sure that it does get done so that when 2014 arrives, they can hand this off to the afghans and say, it's now your war to keep and your country to keep free. >> harris: well, you've certainly met some beautiful men and women there. thank you for sharing your story here on the fox report.
